SISAL is a fibre prduced from the Sisalana plant. The plant was originally a native of Central & South America but has since been cultivated in Africa & the Far East.  The leaves of the plant are harvested and the fibres stripped. The fibres are then washed to remove the starch and then left to dry in the sun.  At this point in the process the sisal fibres are pure white, most manufacturers then dye the material.  Sisal is the most hardwearing Natural Fibre that is used in floorcoverings today. It is suitable for use anywhere in the house but can be rough rough underfoot for use in a bathroom.  Care should also be taken in dining/kitchens. Sisal is perfectly suited for stairs, as long as it is fitted correctly.

Most natural floorings such as Sisal has a latex backing.  There are a number advantages for using this backing, it bonds the fibres together and stops dirt going trough the backing and it gives the fibre some dimensional stability.
