Selecting the Best Carpet Underlay

There are many different types of carpet underlay available on the market today. Traditionally a rubber underlay has been the most popular but this underlay has perhaps seen its day.

Whilst rubber is still an excellent underlay and will always have its place, especially on the stairs, PU foam underlay is fast becoming the market leader.

PU foam underlay was originally developed in the USA and has made a growing appearance in the this country in the last 15 years. It is now the most popular underlay type in the UK and Tredaire Dreamwalk is our favourite. This product from the Seventh Heaven range combines quality and value and is difficult to beat.

PU underlay has many advantages - it is kind to the environment, it is light and easy to handle and transport. But above all that it is comfortable underfoot. The most luxurious PU underlay we supply is Tredaire Sensation. Being some 40% more dense than even our best selling Dreamwalk and still only 11mm tick this must be a challenger for the best carpet underlay on the market.

  1. If you want the best comfort you should look at premium products where luxury comfort is needed and foot traffic is high (e.g. living rooms). Recommended underlays include Tredaire Dreamwalk, Sensation, Softwalk and Colours Red.
  2. For better comfort but foot traffic is low (e.g. master bedrooms). Recommended underlays include Tredaire Zest and Brio.
  3. Good comfort where everyday comfort and where foot traffic is low or infrequent (e.g. spare bedrooms). We would recommended Tredaire Brio.
  4. High traffic and High impact areas where foot traffic is really high (such as the hall stairs and landing) or there is a high impact from heavy furniture . Underlays with high density and recovery rates are needed. We recommend underlays like Duralay Treadmore (crumb underlays with 100% recovery) or Tredaire Sensation.
  5. Noise reduction underlays for wood and laminate flooring - Coming to this site soon.
  6. Low tog ratings for underfloor heating require specially designed low tog carpet underlays. These will have tog ratings of less than 1. For example we recommend King Carpet Underlay with a tog rating of 0.80.
  7. Areas for wheelchair use, walking aids, natural floorcoverings (such as sisal) or border carpets. Please select a double stick underlays such as Duralay System Ten and Durafit 500 or 650.
